Why the Sweet Dreams Series?
Firstly it's not just the Sweet Dreams series, there are other books, that as a
teenager had an affect on me. However the books in this series really did have an effect on me. I am dyslexic. As a young girl I
did not read...ever! I even bluffed my way through the dire books thrust upon us in at school. I don't remember how i came across
the series but I did, it was the first time I remember actually wanting to read, and I devoured as many as I could.
I even joined the library!
This really did make a difference to the way I looked at reading (I never start out on my hour long commute to into
London each day without a good novel tucked into my handbag!). Although my tastes have broadened over the years
(I now have quite an appetite for World War 2 literature!) my heart still lies in a good romance
(I nearly cried with joy the day I discovered Jane Austen!). Over the years I have so much pleasure reading,
none of which I would have had if I had not picked up a Sweet Dreams book at the age of 14.
Why now after so long?
A little while back I was browsing e-bay and I came across "The Popularity Plan", I remembered reading it as a girl.
It brought on a moment of nostalgia and I bought it. I was surprised to to find when I started looking that there
was very little on the internet about these books, although a little searching
proved they were easy to get hold of
second-hand. So I started to collect a few, I wanted to see what the books were really like, (and to relive my youth a
little!) and if they were as good as I remember.
Why create a website?
I can't be the only one who looks back on these books fondly...can I? Maybe I am! I like learning new things and have
been trying to learn html, java etc. As I have started reading the books again, I decided to make it a project,
to read these books and practice my website building skills at the same time!
I have to admit to getting side-tracked on for a few weeks re-reading Janet Quin -Harkins "Heartbreak Café series,
which I stumbled across during my search for these books, so I decided to include it in the site and am
back on track!
Which is your favourite book in the series?
This will sound odd, but I can't remember the name! I remember it had to do with a girl who liked cross-country skiing
and involved lots of snow! I can also picture the cover in my head, but do
you think I can find it? Of course not! I do not
have all the books, I thought I would treat this site almost as a blog, review the books as I read them an update the
site as I go.
In conclusion to this question I will update the answer to this question when I find the book!
Update: I found it! It was book 54 called "I can't
forget You". I have ordered it and will review it when
it arrives.
How do you approach book reviews?
Some may not agree with my approach when reviewing these books, but the way I look at it is that this is not
Jane Austen or Shakespeare! They are not classic tomes to be taken seriously and picked apart in minute detail.
These books were romantic stories aimed at teenage girls and should be reviewed as such. I could, in every review
pick the story apart and moan about the lack of in-depth characters, or note the book followed a standard formula
for this genre, but that would be repetitive and boring to read! I genuinely enjoyed these books as a girl and am
unwilling to dissect each one and condemn it to the literary scrap-heap. That said, if it’s bad, I’ll say! .
